just passing the time

if all goes according to plan, i'm supposed to get my sewing machine on Friday. so, to pass the time, I've been cutting out various projects so that i'll have stuff to sew when it gets here and impatient me won't have to go through the normal process of pinning and cutting--i can skip right to the good stuff. so far i've cut out a skirt, a blouse, a bag, part of a quilt top, and a dress. yes, i may be going a bit overboard, but what can i say? i'm excited. i'm also taking time off next week, so i'll have lots of time to play sew.

in the meantime, i decided to get some serger practice by sewing a new cardigan entirely on the serger. i've had this book for years but haven't really looked at it much because it looks so dated. seriously though--it has some great technique info and i plan to use it a lot in the future.

so i definitely need more practice. i used the differential feed to gather the skirt to the bodice but it wasn't super easy. i also did a rolled hem on all the exposed edges.

i'm happy with how the cardigan turned out but it's a challenging style to wear. i've found that if i'm not careful it veers into matronly territory. i do love the drape and how it swishes when you walk. i think i'll get a lot of wear out of this in the fall because the silk is quite warm. i still have enough fabric left to make another top as well.

i would love another cardigan like this in black. i'm nothing if not predictable.

  1. I forgot to comment before on your new machine. That's awesome! I don't blame you for being impatient. Your serging is impressive to me; I've never used a serger before.

  2. I'm so excited about your new machine! Ha ha! Great idea cutting out patterns now before it arrives. That's always the most time consuming thing!
