a basic failure

everyone needs basic white tops in their wardrobe. Simplicity 4076 is a great pattern, with 3 different styles for knit tops. I made 2 of them from the last of my bamboo jersey.

Construction-wise, this went together really smoothly. i'm finally learning to take the foot off the gas on my serger and the stitching is my best yet.

Size-wise, this was a FAIL. i cut out the size 12, which fits fine in the waist/hips area, but it's way too large from the bust on up. next time i should really grade the pattern to fit better. one of those, "i knew better, but" things. the same thing happened with the other view that i sewed, the gathered scoop-neck tee.

i am glad to be finished with the bamboo jersey. it feels soft and cool to wear, but it's a bear to cut, not much easier to sew, it's a bit too sheer, and it wrinkles like crazy. oh and i have to stay away from the cats, because they've punctured holes in the other 2 tops i've made from this fabric.

i will definitely be going back to this pattern. i want to try the twist-front top, and the other two are basic designs that can be made over and over. i think this particular faux-wrap style would look better in a print, like it shows on the pattern envelope. i really like the side ruching and the flutter sleeves. i'll just make it fit better next time.

  1. Sizing different sections of the same pattern is one of the most daunting parts of sewing. It just seems tricky to modify one portion, but not the rest.

  2. I've got that same pattern! I ordered it before I realized it was for knits. Ugh. I'm just not there yet.
Now I have to know--what on earth are your cats doing to your laundry if they've punctured your other two tops!

  3. Sorry it doesn't fit right. But once I get to the point where I can sew knits, I'm definitely going to check out that pattern!
