the things we do for love

i'm pretty sure the last time i made a pair of gloves, i said i didn't care to make another pair ever again. on sunday, i was on the couch working on a pair of mittens with some plymouth suri merino for a new design and i said to myself, "I don't think this is working out." at which point, spicy leaned in and said, "well, you could always make them into gloves for me." at which point I stammered, "um, i just meant that the cable i picked isn't working and i'll have to substitute another one. i didn't mean that i'm going to change them into something else entirely." at which point he looked just a tiny bit crestfallen and said, "well it was just a suggestion."

so while i was finishing the mittens it occurred to me that i do have a gazillion skeins of suri merino in various colors. i picked up the two blue skeins, whipped out the handy book of patterns, sucked it up, and made spicy a pair of gloves.
Gloves for Spicy
Pattern: Basic Gloves from the knitter's handy book of patterns
Size: Men's M (second to largest size) at 5 st / in
Yarn: Plymouth Suri Merino, 2 skeins
Needles: #5 knitpicks harmonies
Started: November 7, Finished: November 9

i did 3x3 ribbing on the cuff b/c Mr. Plain Man doesn't like anything too fancy. the experience wasn't too painful but i still hate making gloves. if they don't fit and i have to rip out the fingers and redo them somehow, that will be extra painful. the thought did cross my mind that gloves would be an excellent xmas gift for my brother, but i'll have to ponder that one a bit more as i'm not sure i can stand to whip out another pair so soon after this one.
Sunset Fibers Club
on the bobbin, i have the first fiber club shipment of my sunset fibers merino. i've said this before, but i'll say it again--I heart pin-drafted roving. it practically spins itself. i'm planning to chain ply when i finish spinning the singles. the only thing i'm not in love with is the colors, but i have a plan for that after i'm done with the skein.

  1. You are so brave to make a pair of gloves. Even though I haven't made gloves yet, I think I have the same feelings about then as you do.
    The spinning looks perfect!

  2. I ordered some of the pin drafted after I read about it on your blog a few weeks ago - also not in love with my colors, but it seemed like it might be good practice fiber :-)

I'm not a fiddly finger fan either, but I do like gloves, so maybe someday.

  3. Nicely done on the gloves! Spicy's very subtle with his hints. ;)
