Mail Sack

Mail Sack

Before our NYC trip, I wanted to make a new bag. My super tote got me through winter but it's looking rather sad now. I really like cross body bags and I've been wanting to try the Pink Chalk Fabrics Mail Sack for practically forever. I was in a rush and put this bag together the evening before our trip. If I'd had more time I would've picked different fabrics. I like the typewriters, but I think my choices could've been more inspired. I do like the addition of the solid strip between the exterior fabrics.

I made the smaller size and lengthened the strap to fit me. Originally I was going to make the larger version, but now I'm glad I didn't because this bag is the perfect size. I interfaced with SF-101 on the lining and Annie's Soft and Stable for the exterior. I should have pieced the exterior together and then cut the soft and stable the same as the lining piece rather than cutting IF for each piece separately. the foam stabilizer is quite dense and bulky. I found it kind of annoying to work with, especially when turning the straps, but I do like the body and stiffness it provides. I would use it again, but next time I would try to minimize the bulk as much as possible.

For mods, I inserted a magnetic snap, which I now think was unnecessary. I also made my own pocket to fit my cell phone. I've learned over the years that I don't use the larger divided pockets at all. I added a keyring to hold my keys so they don't get lost. I also didn't have enough lining fabric for the straps so I had to piece in small bits of the yellow letters for the interior of the strap. i actually think it adds a nice visual touch. If I were to do it again, I'd probably add an exterior pocket like the one on the super tote. i found it super convenient to hold my sunglasses and things i need in immediate reach. i miss having it on this one.

I think this post has talked me into making another mail sack. with just a few more tweaks and more creative fabric choices, it'd be the perfect bag.
