gingham goodness

Aaaaand, I'm back. i had a wonderful month free from blogging. offices were moved into, sicknesses were gotten over, family was visited, and a lot of quality time was spent with Daisy. a quick logistical note: changes are afoot around here. I finally made the move to knottygnome.com. my new RSS feed is here if you'd like to update your bookmarks, though the old feed should still work perfectly fine.

During my hiatus, I made a gingham placemat for work. after finishing it, i hadn't quite purged the gingham idea from my system, so i made this baby quilt.
  Gingham Quilt
i used 4 colors of kona cotton: black, charcoal, medium gray, and snow. i took my color cues from this dress. i was originally only going to use 3 colors but i noticed that the woven pattern really made use of 4 shades. i still have more ideas for gingham color combos so i may return to this idea in the future.

the backing is pinwheels from mama said sew and a red timeless treasures solid. the binding is poppy dash stripe from a walk in the woods with a smidgen of charcoal spliced in. the binding was handstitched to the back. i used quilter's dream cotton for the batting.Gingham Quilt
i haven't done much handquilting but i wanted to stretch myself. i thought that a grid pattern would look nice. i used #8 white DMC perle cotton. i kept my stitches chunky and i love the effect. it took me one day to piece the top and backing and to baste the quilt, and about a week to handquilt. i am definitely going to keep handquilting in my repertoire. i have lots of ideas swimming in my head. i think the look of this quilt is charmingly old-fashioned but still minimally modern. i'm sneaking this in on the last day of the Blogger's Quilt Festival. there are so many gorgeous quilts linked. you should check it out if you haven't already!
