I got a new ipad a couple of days ago, so naturally i was anxious to make a cute case for it. i might be the only person in the world more excited about the prospect of sewing a case for my new toy than i am about the ipad itself.
I chose a gray riley blake chevron and some metro living for the exterior with amy butler lotus dots for the lining and straps. the pocket lining is an orange shot cotton. i went with pale orange and lime green zippers. i used fusible fleece on the exterior and the zippered pocket uses a lightweight interfacing to stabilize the fabric. i even stitched in one of my new labels.
there are many ipad case tutorials out there but i couldn't quite find exactly what i was looking for. i finagled my own design. i wanted a zipper closure on the longest side and most tutorials that had a zipper put it on the short side. i added a slip pocket to the outside of the case for temporary storage and a zippered pocket in the slip pocket to keep cords tucked away. i also wanted a detachable strap for carrying and storage. i made my case like a lined zipper pouch so there are no raw edges exposed. i handstitched the lining shut.
there was just one problem with my plan. i made the case too small. i spent an entire evening putting it together very carefully and then the ipad wouldn't fit in the case. so, after spending a few seconds shouting, "noooooooooo," i set about cutting out fabrics for a new improved embiggened version that would actually fit.
success! plus, it's not all bad. i got to try out my other label and i like the fabrics even better. this time i skipped the extra interfacing on the pocket since i used a heavier linen/cotton blend. i kept the exterior and pocket all one fabric (melody miller typewriters) and used a DS daisy mae for the pocket lining. the interior and strap are modern whimsy circles. now i'm extra pleased with myself. i heart my new case. i kind of want to hug it. in addition, i ended up with a bonus clutch bag. so there's that.
