Spider Selvedge

And now, the saga continues...

Jacey will be getting married soon. I know this because unlike some people i know, she actually planned this thing instead of just going out and doing it one day. so i had plenty of advance notice and I wanted to include a wedding gift in her package.

in addition to keeping pieced bits and bobs, i also have a bag of selvedges. i surprisingly have quite the collection. i guess i've been saving them for years and haven't really used them very much except for a few projects here and there. i've always wanted to try spiderweb blocks. i used the oh fransson tutorial and sized up the blocks. i used white kona for the foundation and added a blue shot cotton for the border. i believe i even managed to work in a couple of selvedges that i got from Jacey herself. i'm pretty sure it's an 18" pillow cover but i can't recall for certain.

the backing is a flora and fauna michael miller print. i made a lapped zip closure. the binding is a remix fabric. i cut it a little wider than normal because i thought it would be necessary with the bulk of the extra layer but i really could've done the normal 2.5".

i quilted in concentric circles using white gutermann thread. i think the lines are 1.5" apart. this is one of my very favorite quilting patterns for minis. maybe i will be brave enough to try it on a larger quilt someday.

i really loved making this pillow--enough so that i started some smaller selvedge blocks for myself right away. naturally i have since gotten distracted by new and shinier things. at any rate, congratulations to Jacey on her impending nuptials! i had great fun with this swap.

  1. wow, i had no idea selvedges could be so cute! nice work, i especially love the circular quilting. i'm in great need of new pillow covers at the moment and i'll be bookmarking this. :)

  2. Ooo!  Very cool!  I would think it would be a PITA to sew all those skinny little selvadges together--no?  The effect is definitely worth it!

  3. Sara. I can't even tell you how much I love your gifts. Seriously. I showed Elliott both items last night. He preferred the pillow over the mini, but I think that's mainly because he doesn't "get" mini quilts. ;) You make amazing things! I love the quilting on both of your items, and the thought that you put into them. And planning a wedding is overrated. All you need is wings. ;) I'm nearing the finish line with your swap!
