Simplicity 3774 View C
After looking through my closet and hemming and hawing for awhile, i decided that i had nothing appropriate to wear to the upcoming wedding. i had made a muslin of this dress about a year ago, but i did a terrible job of picking the right size. the waistband on the muslin was way too tight, so for this one i painstakingly measured and redrafted the pattern to fit me (which i should've done in the first place, but oh well).

i love the pattern. it's really too bad that it's now out of print. the pleats at the bustline are very flattering and i'm a big fan of the fully lined bodice--no weird facings that might poke out of the dress. i used handkerchief linen for the lining, which was probably more of a pain than it needed to be. the fabric kept stretching out of shape and it was a bear to sew. next time i'll use a thin cotton for the lining. i also love the v-shaped back. the skirt has just the right level of swinginess. the pattern is supposed to hit just above the knee, but obviously b/c i'm only 2 feet tall it's a long dress on me which seems appropriate for a wedding. i think it would be cute in a shorter version as well.

because of my general inability to think ahead i didn't realize that the print was directional, and that the layout as directed would give me different facing flowers on each half of the dress. i don't think i would've had enough fabric to make them face all the same way, and i actually kind of like the outcome. at the very least i don't think it's too distracting.

now i have the dilemma that i have no appropriate shoes to go with this dress. if you were me, what would you get? gray? blue?

it's my 29th birthday today and i already got a wonderful present. i finally received news about my house. it looks like the closing will be next week sometime (fingers crossed). the housing contract was signed April 30, so i've been waiting for awhile now. i'm really looking forward to moving and settling into my new place.

  2. Very nice, and congrats on your house! You know, that dress is so pastelly, maybe a little leather sandal would work. Perhaps one of those cork-bottomed jobby you see lately.

  3. Pretty dress! I would probably do a white shoe as well, but that is me, and when I buy a pair of shoes, I have to be able to wear it more than just a couple of times.

Congratulations on the house and VERY, HAPPY, BIRTHDAY! Ah 29, that was so long ago for me :)

  5. Found your blog through the Rav sewing forum ... your dress looks GORGEOUS! The fabric is a perfect choice.

As for shoes... I am in the minority but I would look for something fairly minimal, in an olive metallic. I think white would compete with the dress too much. Something like this if you can do the heel:

    Congrats on the house!

  6. Happy Birthday!!!
Love the dress it look gorgeous on you. I love taking an accent colour of an outfit and wearing shoes/bags/accessories of that colour, so I would go for pale blue or green shoes. If you wanted to be more practical then beige or cream would look lovely. I like wearing coloured shoes but my mum prefers neutral shoes as they are more versatile. Let us see what shoes you get.

  9. Happy Birthday! I'd go with white or silver, also.

Metallics are pretty big right now so I think the silver would be my choice!

  11. Happy Birthday! Awesome news about the house--FINALLY!

Myself? I'd stick with black shoes. White or gray or any other color, I'd never wear again. I'm not very adventureous.

Love the dress too! That pattern is going for $4 on etsy. I love etsy for finding OOP patterns! They're usually super cheap. I can't believe how expensive new patterns are!

  12. Happy Belated Birthday!

The dress turned out great! I actually like that the flowers are facing rather than all one direction. As for shoes, I'm not sure I'd go with white. I think grey would look much more chic.
