surprising socks

Bettie's Lace Stockings
10th pair of 2009.
Started May 29, Finished June 5.
Bettie's Lace Stockings from Spring Interweave Knits 2009.
#2 addi turbos
3ply handspun merino

these were a birthday gift for my friend. i added one pattern repeat to the foot and a few to the leg (maybe 3-ish?) i also added 16 rows of 1x1 cuff ribbing b/c the picot wasn't doing it for me, and b/c i wanted the socks to stay up sans ribbons.

my friend has much skinnier calves than i do, so hopefully they'll look better on her. if i were making these for me i'd go up a needle size on the calf increase portion.

i'm thrilled with my 3ply handspun. it was very bouncy and stretchy, much more so than your average commercial yarn. the pattern took a surprisingly small amount of yarn. i only had 321 yds, so i divided the ball into two to monitor my usage. i needn't have worried as i still had a substantial amount leftover. my handspun was more of a sportweight, and i think it worked out better than a fingering yarn would have. looking closely at the pattern pics, you can see that the stockinette portions seem thin.

i am very happy with these socks. i hate spinning a true 3ply yarn because it seems to take forever, but now i have more incentive to try it again.
