Socktoberfest bandwagon

When did you start making socks? Did you teach yourself or were you taught by a friend or relative? or in a class?
Probably Fall of 2004. i learned from a free pattern on the internet that i can no longer find.

What was your first pair? How have they "held up" over time?
my first pair of socks were red elann esprit anklets with garter stitch cuffs, heels, and toes. i had purchased the yarn to make mon petit chou but later decided that the pattern was beyond my skill level (and not very practical). i didn't understand why anyone would want to knit their own socks, but i figured i'd give it a try. i still have the socks.

What would you have done differently?
the only problem with them is that my cast on was too tight and they are somewhat difficult to get on my feet. i don't wear them that often.

What yarns have you particularly enjoyed?
i really liked knitting koigu, interlacements toasty toes, and mountain colors bearfoot. i have a very strong dislike for lorna's laces in sock form. i like variegated colors, but i hate pooling.

Do you like to crochet your socks? or knit them on DPNs, 2 circulars, or using the Magic Loop method?
i do crochet, but i've never made socks. i would think that crocheted socks would be thick and inflexible, but i could be wrong. i have used magic loop on a pair of socks once. i much prefer 5 dpns.

Which kind of heel do you prefer? (flap? or short-row?)
i strongly prefer a heel flap, either cuff-down or toe-up. i dislike knitting AND wearing short-row heels.

How many pairs have you made?
i'm not sure. probably between 25 and 30 pairs.

  1. It sure is cozy and full of fun people on this bandwagon! Sounds like you've knit a lot of socks, do you wear them exclusively now? I guess I have a lot of catching up to do!
